For those who fight for it, life has a flavor the sheltered will never know.
This was Zack Snyder’s first film that he has written himself, the Dawn of the Dead, 300 and Watchmen director kept us in suspense for the last year when he introduced Sucker Punch to us. In the beginning we meet the blonde heroine Baby Doll (Emily Browning) who accidentally shoots her younger sister while attempting to fend off the advances of her stepfather.Packed off to a home for the criminally insane, Baby Doll faces a gloomy fate: a lobotomy and further abuse from the asylum’s boss, Blue Jones (Oscar Isaac). Baby Doll retreats into a fantasy world, in which she’s not a patient in an asylum but a dancer in a brothel. In the brothel she meets fellow dancers Sweet Pea (Abbie Cornish), Rocket (Jena Malone) , Blondie (Vanessa Hudgens) and Amber (Jamie Chung).Whenever she’s ordered to humiliate herself by dancing, she retreats into another layer of the fantasy, which include gigantic ninjas,gas-powered Nazis, trolls and crazy robots. She is told in the fantasy by the Wise Man (Scott Glenn) to collect 5 items, which are a map, fire, a knife, a key and a mystery item (which you find out at the end). All these items will help Baby Doll and company escape from the brothel and from the clutches of the High Roller (Jon Hamm) who paid a large sum to sleep with Baby Doll and take her virginity. With her mob of scantily clad friends they get their guns and swords to kick some ass (Miao). But does she escape ? You’ll have to watch to find out.
I had very high expectations going into this film, but I was slightly disappointed. Personally I think Snyder has just cherry picked random fight scenarios, they all look like video games which Snyder likes. The film really did lack a plot which is a shame from such a highly acclaimed director. Visually it didn’t disappoint me, the cast were fantastic and their never was a dull moment. It’s a geek’s dream movie girls wearing practically nothing, fighting with swords and killing random creatures. I did enjoy it but at the same time I wouldn’t rush to watch it again in the cinema. Lets just hope that Snyder’s attempt at Superman doesn’t do the same.
