The original Scream movie is one of the most iconic slasher films ever made, the fact that the trilogy from 1996-2000 was also a success amazes me. When I heard that Wes Craven was intending to make a fourth I was shocked, I thought it was going to be a waste of time. It’s been 15 years since Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and her friends were terrorized by the ghost-faced killer in the little town of Woodsboro. Sidney has gone on to great career, first her story serving as the inspiration behind a popular series of horror film Stab and later for writing a self-help book, Out of the Darkness. Now she is back in Woodsboro. Sid still has family in town, though she doesn’t know them that well. Her aunt (Mary McDonnell) lives there with her daughter/Sid’s niece Jill (Emma Roberts). We then see that Dewey Riley (David Arquette), now sheriff, and his wife Gale (Courteney Cox).We then see the story expand with Sidney, Dewey and Gail reunited, and the new generation of Jill and her friends. It isn’t long before ghost face returns and starts slashing his way through Woodsboro, and causing havoc and panic yet again. It is a huge murder mystery , Scre4m constantly keeps the viewer guessing. I was sitting there thinking I know who the killer is and I was completely wrong, I now owe my girlfriend £ 20.Wes Craven and series writer Kevin Williamson clearly revel in having the opportunity to play with the mind of the viewer and they do a fine job of constantly keeping us guessing.
I actually enjoyed Scre4m it is the updated version of the original. It’s more with it as the kids might say, you have the use of mobile phones, social networking and the internet. Which are three main components to connect with a new generation of slasher lovers. But it’s got that old fashioned charm that Slasher films has always had, which is a lot of suspense and blood. The film also takes the piss out of its self with it mocking the slasher genre, as so many film buffs including myself think they know what is going to happen. It has a very young cast included with Emma Roberts leading the way, she is very good in this film. I would think now the door to more mature roles have now opened for her. The image of ghost face still makes people jump and scream in the cinema which really does indicate Wes Craven still remains as one of the Masters of Horror. I am still remaining skeptical as Craven & Williamson have signed a two movie deal, so I do fear for the Scream franchise. I would have laid this franchise to rest now, as Scre4m is Stabtastic !!!!!
