You don’t butt in line! You don’t steal! You don’t molest little children! You don’t deal drugs! The rules haven’t changed!
I’ve been excited to watch Super since the first time I saw the trailer, I’ve been lucky enough to watch the movie before it’s UK release.Rainn Wilson stars as Frank, a sad-sack grill cook who loses his recovering alcoholic wife, Sarah (Liv Tyler), to drug dealer Jacques (Kevin Bacon). In the midst of his depression, Frank becomes inspired by a religious cable access show about a superhero The Holy Avenger, whose main nemesis is the devil. Hallucinating that he has been touched by the finger of God, Frank comes up with the idea he should go out and fight crime himself, as if no one had ever thought of that before. He creates a superhero alter ego, The Crimson Bolt, and sets out in a homemade costume without any training or fighting skills to speak of ! In researching his new calling, Frank enlists the help of a comic book store clerk named Libby (Ellen Page), who points out heroes without powers have to at least have weapons. He takes this to heart and starts using a pipe wrench in his vigilante endeavors. When Libby figures out what he’s doing, she begs him to let her be his sidekick. She even creates a costume and a name for herself, Boltie. Soon, though, it becomes clear that she’s even less mentally stable than Frank. The crime fighting duo seek revenge and justice ……… hope that wets your appetite
Super is no Kick Ass, it’s more for an adult audience. The scenes where The Crimson Bolt hits, stabs and shoots people are quiet gory scenes which make it different to any masked vigilante movie I have seen, I refuse to call Super a super hero movie. It’s more about a man who wants vengeance and to be noticed.Frank’s actions are sick and twisted, but he doesn’t seem to emotionally connect to the pain and suffering he causes. That pretty much makes him a sociopath. Libby is even further gone, but Page does a better job of portraying her psychosis, cackling maniacally when things get brutal. This is a very dark comedy with some gruesome gore. I do like Rainn Wilson in Super his character has so many layers to him, but Ellen Page steals the show for me. It’s rather a different role to what we see her normally, but she did prevail. To put it mildly Super is the best dark comedy I have ever seen, filled with real life situations, quests for self, monsters, superheroes, and twists and turns that more similarly resemble what happens in real life instead of the usual predictable Hollywood ending. This summer is going to be full of blockbusters, but if you fancy something a bit more radical please go watch Super. I doubt it will be making more money than Thor, Captain America and The Green Lantern but it can try. I can imagine this to be more of an indie hit movie more than anything else.
