No Sin Goes Unpunished
What Liam Neeson in another action movie! Where he is drunk, dark and skilful? Ok sign me up, I am never bored with a Neeson movie as of late bar Taken 2+3. His action star visage continues like a meteor hitting the earth. Run All Night was on my radar but I never managed to watch it on release in March. What is Run All Night all about then? Longtime hit man Jimmy Conlon (Liam Neeson), best friend of mob boss Shawn Maguire (Ed Harris), has seen better days. He’s haunted both by the sins of his past and a police detective who’s been breathing down his neck for 30 years, and the only comfort Jimmy has is whiskey. However, when his estranged son (Joel Kinnaman) becomes a mob target, Jimmy figures that the only way to atone for his past mistakes is to make sure that his son doesn’t wind up at the wrong end of a gun.
Liam Neeson in this movie isn’t just playing himself this time, he’s actually got a character ark in this movie and his character isn’t all perfect but more damage and understandable. Liam Nesson did a great performance showing all the pain and sadness from his character. Neeson’s character is the kind of character that I think we all can relate to when he isn’t perfect but he’s trying his hardest to make things right but it doesn’t quite work out, we had that in are life’s and it may not happened to you yet but it will do sooner or late.Ed Harris was decent in this movie. He isn’t one of those memorable villains to be honest, he does have his sinister moments but it doesn’t cement the character. Joel Kinnaman I have issues with he was rather meh in Robo-Cop and the mehness continues here. His facial expressions never change and he lacks passion throughout.
The directing of the movie I thought did a great job directing characters and actions scenes. There are interesting shots from across New York city, and everything folds out clearly with a great dynamic twist. Jaume Collet-Serra seems to be relishing the action movie genre right now. Non-Stop was just the beginning for him, now Run All Night give him the momentum. The screenplay was rather cliché and predictable, but the pacing and adrenaline rush of the film carries it. There is a lot going on through out also with the mob, police, Jimmy and Shawn’s rivalry, family issues etc. So we do ask for answers through out and it does leave you confused at some points. Run All Night is a bit of fun and easy watching. Liam Neeson does carry the film a lot but with two dimensional cast around him they keep him on his feet. It’s not a perfect film at all but it does keep the action movie alive for a while longer.
