This isn’t about money. This isn’t about politics. I can target anyone, anything, anywhere.
Michael Mann is a formidable film-maker, his meticulous work has stuck with me for many years from Heat to Collateral and even Public Enemies. Blackhat has received great divided opinion since it was released in February.
Some are hailing it an intellectual hit and some just a complete dud of a movie. What is Blackhat about you say? After a Hong Kong nuclear plant and the Mercantile Trade Exchange in Chicago are hacked by unknown perpetrators, a federal agent (Viola Davis) proposes that the FBI work with China to find the cyber-criminals. The leader of the Chinese team, Chen Dawai, insists that convicted hacker Nick Hathaway (Chris Hemsworth) be released from prison to help with the investigation. As Nick and his comrades chase their quarry, it becomes evident that the hackers have a sinister motive for their actions.
Michael Mann knows how to do a crime thriller. However, he has hit a dry spell lately despite attaining great visuals and solid casts. Unfortuantley this is the latter for Mann, don’t get me wrong the direction and cinematography is good. The scenery is fantastic and some of the action is shot well. This is as far as the positives go I’m afraid. It’s difficult to Chris Hemsworth as a computer hacker. It doesn’t help either that he is devoid of any charisma and just kinda stares and types all the time. Speaking of typing, you better enjoy it because that’s how most of the action will consist of. The rest of the cast are barely present with the love interest being dull. Blackhat drags for a long time and it really makes it feel longer than what it is. There is a lot of technical jargon through out and for a general audience member it’s difficult to keep track. I almost gave up watching it at numerous points but I persevered. Unfortuanley this is all I can say without blowing my lid.
