Just Jim is Craig Roberts directorial début, he sprung up into cinema starring in Richard Ayoade’s Submarine. Possibly one of the best British films of the 21st century. At the tender age of 24 Craig Roberts has gone all out and starred, wrote and directed Just Jim. Roberts has even filmed it in his home town in Wales. The locations have much meaning and depth to them it’s a real passion project for him. This is how you start a career behind the lens going for the triple threat. So what is Just Jim about? A Welsh teenager will become the cool kid of the town if a deal is made with his new American neighbour. Just Jim is a great dark comedy, it’s written very well and the comedic timing is utterly tremendous. There is such a dark undertone to the film the comedy really does cut the tension out. Any mature audience can connect with Jim and the teenage angst he suffers through out the film. From being socially accepted to love interests you empathize throughout.
The way the film has been shot has a very Wes Anderson feel to it lots of parallel lines, sliding cameras and attention to detail. There were a few shots where it looks like the scene is quite squashed, not sure if it was our projection or the film. Craig Robert’s as Jim was a very evolved version of his character in Submarine but I loved it. He has such great comedic timing but his serious side does shine through a lot. His facial expressions alone captivate the scene. Emile Hirsch truly was the Tyler Durden of the piece very aggressive, very suave and cool. It’s good to see Hirsch making an impact again in a film.My main issue is that the first half of the film was stronger than it’s second half. Much more of a tone and flow to it, but then Just Jim looses it’s way. Never the less Craig Roberts should be proud of himself and I look forward to the next project. It’s great seeing a Welshman representing us in film.
