Where’s my goddamn latté?
Back in 2001 Ben Stiller unleashed his most formidable character to the world Derek Zoolander! Utterly one of the greatest comedies of the 21st century, it has taken 15 years for a sequel. The major question is it pointless? Clearly it’s for money and we are expecting it not to surpass it’s predecessor. Zoolander 2 has been slated by critics and allegedly one of the biggest comedy stinkers ever. So what is Zoolander 2 about? Fifteen years have passed since pouty Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) bestrode the world like a colossus as the world’s greatest male fashion model. Today, Derek and his catwalk rival-turned-friend Hansel (Owen Wilson) find themselves cruelly dismissed as old and irrelevant. But then someone starts murdering the world’s most beautiful people, who are all found sporting Derek’s iconic Blue Steel look. Baffled Interpol Fashion Division agent Valentina (Penelope Cruz) recruits our heroes to go undercover in the world of high fashion, which is now dominated by plastic surgery enthusiast Alexanya Atoz (Kristen Wiig). Delighted to find themselves back in the game, Derek and Hansel soon find that all roads lead to their old foe, Mugatu (Will Ferrell).
First of all Zoolander 2 isn’t as bad as the critics say. The screening I attended has people laughing through out, it’s not as laugh out loud but it’s funny. It’s not as good as the original this was expected the plot is pointless but it’s spontaneousness saves it. The amount of cameos is astounding Kiefer Sutherland, Sting and Benedict Cumberbatch are utterly amazing cameos. But personally there are far too many cameos here but it does keep the interest going. After a solid month of award season films, Zoolander 2 was a breath of fresh air for me. Dumb comedies like this will always divide opinions, but Ben Stiller did a great job. This was a pure OTT comedy with no structure nor depth of field. It’s a completely beast compared to Zoolander and I love the way it takes the piss out of our current society. This being political, fashion, technology it does have very current jokes. Ben Stiller was kind of irritating in some scenes, while Owen Wilson did a pretty good job. Penelope Cruz did a decent job here but Kiefer steals the show for me he was fricking hilarious. Probably some of you will be thinking what has this guy been smoking? But Zoolander 2 is a great time. If you want something more thought provoking go watch Spotlight, The Revenant or Room. If you want some pure random comedy go watch Zoolander 2.
