Crazy is building your ark after the flood has already come
2 months ago the world was shocked to hear Cloverfiled had a sequel! Originally titled The Cellar it wasn’t a link to Cloverfield. Bad Robot have developed and evolved it to become the little brother of the 2008 hit. I do love a one room kind of film, this is barely anything to do with the continuation of the original but this film was going to be special! So what is 10 Cloverfield Lane about? A woman tries to escape from a mysterious bunker in this edge-of-seat sci-fi thriller from JJ Abrams. After waking in a well-stocked basement, a young woman (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) finds that she’s in the care of a survivalist (John Goodman). He insists that a nuclear catastrophe has made the outside world unsafe and she must never attempt to leave. But is he telling the truth? Or is something far more sinister going on? The film is very tense, very confining and claustrophobic. With a brilliantly dark and somewhat nightmarish tone, the film plays out like a human version of mice in a rigged maze. One thing to note, while it may seem obvious, 10 Cloverfield Lane is very different from Cloverfield. Where Cloverfield was a found-footage disaster film with a huge scope, 10 Cloverfield Lane is a very confined traditionally shot thriller about people trapped in a bunker.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr. were just downright amazing in this film and were 110% committed to their roles. But the film does belong to John Goodman! It feels like a decade since we last saw him on screen, or at least that’s what it seems, because I’m wondering to myself, where has this guy been? He’s one of the great actors. He is electrifying in this. The story in the film is unpredictable and very well written. The story unfolds with one twist after another, with each twist bigger than the last, until the film builds into its climax. The third act is very sloppy and didn’t belong in the film I think. Another element that was very well done was the character development, as each character is well-rounded, and given a good arc. 10 Cloverfield Lane is a well crafted thriller that delivers! The end result is a great film that is in many ways better than the original Cloverfield, because of the effort and care of the people making it. For those that love tense thrillers, or just in general great films, this film will surely entertain.
