I know how much Barnes means to you… Stay at home
Captain America: Civil War seems to be Avengers 2.50! We have a large amount of the Marvel superheroes in one Captain America movie. Steve Rogers showed enough guns in Winter Solider (my personal favourite), why did he need so many in his third instalment? This has bamboozled me for a while, but obviously it’s a money gimmick! Also it’s a stepping stone to the inevitable Infinity War that will be here in two short years. So what is Civil War about? Following an incident involving the Avengers which involved much collateral damage, politicians propose a governing body to monitor the activities of superheroes. This brings Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) into conflict with Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), with the other Avengers choosing sides behind Captain America and Iron Man. But while fighting each other, they must work out how to protect the world from a new enemy…
Civil War is good but it’s no Winter Soldier! The big debate will be is it better than Batman Vs Superman…for me
they are equally as good. Civil War is really a mere appetizer for what is to come in the Marvel Universe! We get Spider-man, Black Panther and a new divide within the Avengers, the build up has begun. The Russo Brothers truly know how to make great action sequences, the main battle in particular was just wonderful. It was a cocktail of grit and humour, it really highlighted what Marvel are good at. The Russo’s were known for their comedy shows and movies before, but now I do truly believe they are the correct choice to bring this tale to an end. My main issue with Civil War was the first half of the film, for me it dragged for far too long. I understand that it’s trying to set up the bigger picture for the film, but it really could have been condensed! Once we past the first hurdle it just got better and better. It just did have that Winter Solider tone I was expecting, if it was there I probably would of loved it. The structure really needed re-tweaking too, but I don’t do spoilers so I won’t go any further on that.
As for the cast Chris Evans keeps up a good run of form. I did feel like Cap didn’t feel so emotionally involved as he should be. Plus his screen time considering his name is on the poster was rather thin. Downey Jr. does go from strength to strength with Tony Stark. He is maturing as each film passes and I can honestly feel the pressure is actually getting to him now. It’ll be interesting what his role will be in Spider-man: Homecoming. Johansson, Boseman, Stan, Mackie, Renner and Bettany make the most of the time they have on screen but nothing note worthy. Thank Jebus for Paul Rudd, he truly gave the film some much needed comic relief and also a certain moment in the film made me SO HAPPY (the BIG caps is the hint!). Tom Holland’s début as Peter Parker/Spider-man was FANTASTIC he has wiped Andrew Garfield out of my mind. He is actually in High School, his powers are new and he fits the bill. I am very on board for his upcoming movie in 2017. The Star Wars reference had me in stitches! Elizabeth Olsen still is making me worried, she needs to stop jumping dialects and I’ll be fine!
Daniel Bruhl made an interesting villain, he actually had an emotional motive for his hate. This is very seldom in Marvel films, they normally just want something or hate someone. He had a purpose and a mission, but it just wasn’t executed that well. Captain America: Civil War is a great time, preferably after the first hour. For me it didn’t hit the highs it could of potentially hit. It does leave you wanting to know how everything will pan out for the next two years. But something tells me we won’t be seeing much build up now until maybe Guardians of the Galaxy Two or Thor: Ragnorak! If you want to watch a great action film look no further, Civil War is here!
